If you’ve dreamed of a fast-paced job that doesn’t involve sitting at a desk for every step of the process, and allows you to use your people skills, real estate may be the arena for you. If you’re considering entering this field, find out how to get qualified. The requirements for Utah real estate licensing aren’t as difficult to attain as you may think.

General Requirements

You must be at least 18 years old and have at least a high school diploma to begin the process. You must not have been convicted of a felony within the last five years and you must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor that involved your character (theft, dishonesty, fraud, misrepresentation) within the last three years. If you fit that description, then you’re already well on your way to meeting the requirements for a real estate license.

Steps to Take

The work that you must put in to show that you are qualified for the license is not as strenuous as it is for many other careers. You must first seek out a certified real estate pre-license school. Utah real estate licensing requires that you take 120 hours of approved education with that school. The classes that are involved in this coursework are stylistically similar to college classes; they involve reading a textbook, either in print or online, and utilizing lecture-style instruction, which could take place in a classroom or in a variety of online formats. The classes give you the skills you need to be an effective real estate agent: knowledge of taxes, financing, land descriptions, liens, property acquisition, contracts, business principles, ethics, pricing, and the basics of real estate law. Though you will develop your own methods of personally relating to customers and getting them to buy houses when you are actually out in the field, the classes can give you the foundation you need to develop your unique style as an agent. After you have completed your 120 hours of coursework, you’re ready to take – and hopefully pass – the Sales Agent exam.

Loose Ends

After you’ve taken your classes and passed your exam, all that’s left to do is paperwork. You must sign and submit an application, submit a certificate from your school, sign a Qualifying Questionnaire, submit your fingerprints, and pay a few fees. If you successfully complete all these steps, then you’ve completed the process for Utah real estate licensing and it’s time to dive into your new career path.
